Barrow Motors Demolition

January 2007

After an alleged two year wait for the owners of the Barrow Motors building to begin demolition work, the council took action under the Dangerous Buildings Act, and demolition began in early September of last year. The demolition contractors appeared on site around September 19th and by early December, it was all over.

Throughout most of October, there was little action on site as the contractors discovered asbestos in the structure and the usual regulatory proceedings were carried out to make the site safe. Work started again around early to mid November and it took around three weeks for the remaining structure to be completely demolished with the aid of a large digger and some assistance from the utilities companies.

Northenden.Net presents a series of pictures charting the demolition of the Barrow Motors building, which had been a feature of Northenden since the 1960's and was revamped during the late 1980's upon the change of dealership. This feature was originally presented on the Northenden.Net Community Update Page. Some of the early photos were taken by Lee Cavanagh using a mobile phone. Most of the rest were taken by either Vernon or Ernest Reid.
